What Are Coordinate Graphs?
Coordinate graphs help us locate points using numbers!
A coordinate graph has two number lines that cross each other. The horizontal line is called the x-axis, and the vertical line is called the y-axis. Together, they form a grid where we can plot points using ordered pairs like (3, 2).
How to Plot Points
1️⃣ Find the x-coordinate - Move right (positive) or left (negative) on the x-axis
2️⃣ Find the y-coordinate - Move up (positive) or down (negative) from there
3️⃣ Mark the spot - Where the two meet is your point!
Let's Try Some Examples!
Example 1: Treasure Hunt
Captain Mathbeard hid treasure at point (4, 3). Can you find it?
Example 2: Shape Detective
Plot these points to discover the hidden shape: (1,1), (1,4), (4,4), (4,1)
It's a square! All sides are equal!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it real: Use graph paper to map your home layout or neighborhood streets.
- Game time: Play "Battleship" to practice coordinate skills in a fun way.
- Art connection: Create coordinate art by plotting points to make pictures.
