Relative Coordinates

Understanding positions by describing where things are in relation to each other!

What Are Relative Coordinates?

Relative coordinates help us describe where something is based on its position compared to something else.
Instead of using numbers like in a coordinate grid, we use words like "above", "below", "left", and "right" to explain positions. It's like giving directions to a friend on how to find something!

How to Use Relative Coordinates

1️⃣ Find your reference point (the object you're comparing to)

2️⃣ Describe the position using direction words (left, right, above, below)

3️⃣ Add distance if needed ("two steps to the right")

Let's Practice with Examples!

Example 1: Treasure Hunt

Help the explorer find the treasure using relative coordinates!

The treasure is 2 steps to the right and 1 step up from the explorer.

Example 2: Robot Directions

Program the robot's path using relative coordinates!

R T

How would you direct the robot (R) to the target (T)?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Play "I Spy" with coordinates: At home or in the car, ask your child to find objects using relative positions ("I spy something to the left of the TV").
  • Create a treasure map: Hide a small toy and draw a simple map using relative directions to find it.
  • Use building blocks: Have your child build structures and describe the position of each block relative to others.
