What Are Line Graphs?
Line graphs are like storybooks for numbers!
They show how things change over time by connecting dots with lines. The horizontal line (x-axis) usually shows time (like days or months), and the vertical line (y-axis) shows what we're measuring (like temperature or number of books read).
How to Read a Line Graph
1️⃣ Look at the title - What is the graph about?
2️⃣ Check the axes - What do the x-axis and y-axis represent?
3️⃣ Follow the line - How does it go up, down, or stay the same?
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Ice Cream Sales
On which day were the most ice creams sold? How much money was made that day?
Wednesday was the best day! The shop made $120 that day (the highest point on the graph).
Example 2: Plant Growth
How much did the plant grow between Week 1 and Week 5?
The plant grew from 5 cm to 15 cm, so it grew 10 cm in total!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it real: Create simple line graphs together tracking daily temperatures, steps taken, or minutes read each day.
- Play detective: Ask questions like "When was the highest point?" or "Did it increase or decrease overall?" to build interpretation skills.
- Connect to interests: Help your child find line graphs about their favorite topics (sports stats, animal populations, etc.) to make learning relevant.
