What is a Line Plot?
Line plots are simple graphs that show how often things appear in data.
They use X marks or dots above a number line to show how many times each value appears. Line plots help us see patterns and understand information quickly!
How to Read a Line Plot
1️⃣ Look at the title - It tells you what the data is about
2️⃣ Check the labels - The bottom shows the categories or numbers
3️⃣ Count the marks - Each X or dot represents one item
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors
Here's a line plot showing what ice cream flavors students in Mrs. Smith's class like best:
How many students chose chocolate as their favorite flavor?
Which flavor got exactly 4 votes?
Example 2: Jump Rope Challenge
Students recorded how many jumps they could do without stopping:
How many students jumped between 10-19 times?
What was the most common number of jumps?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it real: Create line plots with everyday data like daily temperatures or weekly reading minutes
- Use sticky notes: Have your child arrange sticky notes on a wall to make a life-sized line plot
- Connect to sports: Track scores or stats from their favorite sports to practice interpretation
