Data and Graphs Section Review

Understanding how to collect, organize, and display information visually

What Are Data and Graphs?

Data is information we collect about things!
Graphs help us see patterns and understand information quickly. There are many types of graphs, each good for showing different kinds of information.

Types of Graphs We've Learned

1️⃣ Bar Graphs - Compare amounts using rectangular bars

2️⃣ Pie Charts - Show parts of a whole like pizza slices

3️⃣ Line Graphs - Show changes over time with connected dots

Let's Practice with Examples!

Example 1: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors

Here's data from your class survey:

Flavor Number of Votes
Chocolate 12
Vanilla 8
Strawberry 5
Mint Chip 3

Let's make this into a bar graph!

20 15 10 5 Choc Van Straw Mint

Example 2: Daily Steps Count

Here's how many steps Sarah took last week:

Day Steps
Monday 5,200
Tuesday 6,800
Wednesday 4,500
Thursday 7,300
Friday 8,000
Saturday 10,500
Sunday 3,200

This would be perfect for a line graph!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Make it real: Collect data about your family's activities (like screen time or steps) and create graphs together.
  • Graph games: Play "guess the graph" where you describe data patterns and your child guesses what the graph might look like.
  • Newspaper hunt: Look for graphs in newspapers or magazines and discuss what they show during breakfast.
