What is a Quotient?
When we divide one number by another, the answer we get is called the quotient!
For example, in 10 ÷ 2 = 5, the number 5 is the quotient. Today we'll learn how to find number pairs that give us specific quotients we want.
How to Find Number Pairs
1️⃣ Start with your target quotient (the answer you want)
2️⃣ Pick any number to be your divisor (the number you'll divide by)
3️⃣ Multiply them together to find your dividend (the number being divided)
Let's Try Some Examples!
Example 1: Find number pairs with quotient of 4
Let's find numbers that give us 4 when we divide them!
Great job! Another pair could be 12 ÷ 3 = 4 or 20 ÷ 5 = 4. There are endless possibilities!
Example 2: Cookie Sharing Challenge
You have some cookies to share equally among friends. You want each friend to get 6 cookies.
Perfect! For 3 friends you'd need 18 cookies (18 ÷ 3 = 6). For 4 friends, 24 cookies (24 ÷ 4 = 6).
Parent Tips 🌟
- Real-life division: Use sharing scenarios like dividing snacks or toys among siblings to practice finding quotients.
- Multiplication connection: Remind your child that division is the opposite of multiplication - if 4 × 5 = 20, then 20 ÷ 5 = 4.
- Make it visual: Use physical objects like buttons or blocks to create division problems and check quotients.
