What is Division?
Division is like sharing or grouping things equally!
When we divide larger numbers by 1-digit numbers, we're figuring out how many equal groups we can make or how much each person gets when we share fairly.
How to Divide Larger Numbers
1️⃣ Divide: See how many times the divisor fits into the first digit(s)
2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply the divisor by your answer
3️⃣ Subtract: Take away that amount from your number
4️⃣ Bring down: Bring down the next digit and repeat!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 84 ÷ 4
Step 1: 8 ÷ 4 = 2
Step 2: 4 × 2 = 8
Step 3: 8 - 8 = 0
Step 4: Bring down 4 → 4 ÷ 4 = 1
Final answer: 21
Each friend gets 21 candies!
Friend 1:
12...21
Example 2: 135 ÷ 5
Step 1: 1 ÷ 5 → doesn't fit, use 13 ÷ 5 = 2
Step 2: 5 × 2 = 10
Step 3: 13 - 10 = 3
Step 4: Bring down 5 → 35 ÷ 5 = 7
Final answer: 27
Each group has 27 stickers!
Group 1:
12...27
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Practice with candies, coins, or toys to make division tangible and fun.
- Break it down: Encourage your child to write out each step (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) to avoid skipping steps.
- Celebrate mistakes: Wrong answers are learning opportunities! Help them identify where the process went wrong.
