The Magic of Dividing Numbers with Zeroes
Did you know dividing numbers with zeroes at the end can be super easy?
When numbers end with zeroes, we can use a special trick to make division simpler. Just count the zeroes and divide the rest of the number first!
How to Divide Numbers Ending in Zeroes
1️⃣ Count the zeroes at the end of your number
2️⃣ Divide the non-zero part by the 1-digit number
3️⃣ Add back the zeroes to your answer (but one less than you started with)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 240 ÷ 6
1. Our number has 1 zero at the end (240)
2. Remove the zero: 24 ÷ 6 = 4
3. Now add back zeroes (but one less than we started with): 4 with no zeroes = 40
Final answer: 40
See how we took away one zero, did the division, then added it back? Magic!
Example 2: 5,000 ÷ 5
1. Our number has 3 zeroes at the end (5,000)
2. Remove all zeroes: 5 ÷ 5 = 1
3. Now add back zeroes (but one less than we started with): 1 with 2 zeroes = 100
Final answer: 1,000
We started with 3 zeroes, did the division with 5÷5=1, then added back 2 zeroes!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use money as examples: Show how $10 divided by 2 is $5, then $100 divided by 2 is $50 - kids relate well to money!
- Make it a game: Write numbers ending with zeroes on cards and have your child race to divide them by numbers you call out.
- Real-world applications: Point out division situations at stores ("If 400 candies are shared among 4 friends...") to show the practical use.
