Inequalities with Division

Learning how to compare numbers using division!

What Are Inequalities with Division?

Inequalities help us compare numbers to see which is bigger or smaller.
When we use division in inequalities, we're comparing how many times one number fits into another. It's like sharing treats fairly among friends!

How to Solve Inequalities with Division

1️⃣ Divide both sides by the same number (except zero!)

2️⃣ Remember: Dividing by a negative number flips the inequality sign!

3️⃣ Check your answer by plugging numbers back in

Let's Practice Together!

Ice Cream Sharing

If 4 kids share more than 12 scoops of ice cream, how many scoops does each kid get?

Let's write this as an inequality: 4x > 12

We divide both sides by 4: x > 3

Each kid gets more than 3 scoops! 🍦

Pizza Party

If we divide 24 slices of pizza among fewer than 6 friends, how many slices does each get?

Let's write this as an inequality: 24 ÷ x < 6 where x is the number of friends

We can rewrite as 24 < 6x, then divide both sides by 6: 4 < x

This means we have more than 4 friends! So each gets fewer than 6 slices. 🍕

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real-life examples: Share cookies, divide toys, or split allowance money to make inequalities tangible.
  • Visual aids help: Draw pictures or use objects to represent the division problems.
  • Play inequality games: Create "greater than/less than" challenges with everyday items.
