Understanding Fractions on Number Lines
Number lines help us see where fractions belong!
Just like whole numbers (1, 2, 3...) have their special spots on a number line, fractions fit between them.
The space between 0 and 1 is divided into equal parts based on the denominator (the bottom number).
How to Graph Fractions in 3 Easy Steps
1️⃣ Find your fraction (like ½ or ¾)
2️⃣ Divide the space between 0 and 1 into equal parts (based on denominator)
3️⃣ Count the parts from 0 to place your fraction (based on numerator)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Place ¾ on the number line
See how ¾ is three parts of the way from 0 to 1? We divided the space into 4 equal parts (because of the denominator 4) and counted 3 parts (because of the numerator 3).
Example 2: Order these fractions from smallest to largest
Drag the fractions to put them in order on the number line below:
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real-world examples: Show fractions on measuring cups or rulers to make the concept more concrete.
- Make it a game: Have your child jump to different fractions marked on the floor with tape to physically experience the number line.
- Start simple: Begin with fractions that have the same denominator (like ¼, ½, ¾) before mixing different denominators.
