Reduce Fractions to Lowest Terms

Making fractions as simple as pie!

What Does It Mean to Reduce Fractions?

Reducing fractions means making them as simple as possible!
When we reduce a fraction to its lowest terms, we're making the numbers smaller but keeping the same value. It's like saying "half a pizza" instead of "two quarters of a pizza" - they mean the same thing, but one is simpler!

How to Reduce Fractions in 3 Easy Steps

1️⃣ Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator

2️⃣ Divide both numerator and denominator by the GCF

3️⃣ Write your simplified fraction!

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: The Pizza Party

You have a pizza cut into 8 slices, and you ate 4 slices. What fraction of the pizza did you eat?

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8

You ate \(\frac{4}{8}\) of the pizza. Let's simplify this!

1. The GCF of 4 and 8 is 4

2. Divide both by 4: \(\frac{4 ÷ 4}{8 ÷ 4} = \frac{1}{2}\)

3. Simplified fraction: \(\frac{1}{2}\)

You ate half the pizza! 🍕

Example 2: The Candy Jar

A jar has 12 candies. 9 are red and 3 are green. What fraction of the candies are red?

9
12

\(\frac{9}{12}\) of the candies are red. Can we simplify this?

1. The GCF of 9 and 12 is 3

2. Divide both by 3: \(\frac{9 ÷ 3}{12 ÷ 3} = \frac{3}{4}\)

3. Simplified fraction: \(\frac{3}{4}\)

Three quarters of the candies are red! 🍬

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Kitchen Math: Use measuring cups to show how ½ cup is the same as 2/4 cup when cooking together.
  • Fraction Hunt: Look for fractions in everyday life (pizza slices, pie charts, etc.) and practice simplifying them.
  • Game Time: Play fraction matching games where you match simplified fractions with their unsimplified versions.
