Classify Triangles by Angles

Discover how triangles can be grouped based on their angles!

What Makes Triangles Special?

All triangles have three sides and three angles, but did you know we can sort them by their angles?
Just like sorting your toys into different boxes, we can put triangles into groups based on whether their angles are small (acute), just right (right), or big (obtuse). Let's explore these triangle types!

The Three Angle Groups

1️⃣ Acute Triangle: All three angles are less than 90°

2️⃣ Right Triangle: Has one angle exactly 90° (like the corner of a book)

3️⃣ Obtuse Triangle: Has one angle greater than 90°

Let's Practice Together!

Triangle A

60° 60° 60°

I'm an acute triangle because all my angles are less than 90°!

Triangle B

30° 60° 90°

I'm a right triangle because I have one 90° angle (see the square corner)!

Interactive Challenge

Look around your room for 5 minutes. Can you find objects that have:

  • Right angles (like the corner of a book or table)?
  • Acute angles (smaller than a right angle)?
  • Obtuse angles (bigger than a right angle)?

Draw triangles that would match each type based on the angles you found!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Angle Hunt Game: Go on a "triangle hunt" around your home or neighborhood and classify any triangles you find by their angles.
  • Hands-on Learning: Use popsicle sticks or straws to create different types of triangles and measure the angles with a protractor.
  • Real-world Connections: Point out right triangles in construction (roofs), acute triangles in pizza slices, and obtuse triangles in some road signs.
