What Are Area and Perimeter?
Area is how much space a shape takes up inside (like how much carpet you'd need to cover a floor).
Perimeter is the distance around the shape (like how much fence you'd need to go around a garden).
How to Compare Two Figures
1️⃣ Measure: Find the area and perimeter of each shape
2️⃣ Calculate: Use the right formulas for each shape
3️⃣ Compare: See which shape has more area or longer perimeter
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Rectangle vs. Square
Rectangle
Length: 8cm
Width: 5cm
Square
Side: 6cm
Rectangle: Area = 5cm × 8cm = 40cm², Perimeter = 2×(5+8) = 26cm
Square: Area = 6cm × 6cm = 36cm², Perimeter = 4×6 = 24cm
The rectangle has more area (40cm² vs 36cm²) but also longer perimeter (26cm vs 24cm)!
Square: Area = 6cm × 6cm = 36cm², Perimeter = 4×6 = 24cm
The rectangle has more area (40cm² vs 36cm²) but also longer perimeter (26cm vs 24cm)!
Example 2: Triangle vs. Rectangle
Triangle
Base: 8cm
Height: 6cm
Sides: 5cm, 5cm, 8cm
Rectangle
Length: 6cm
Width: 4cm
Triangle: Area = ½×8cm×6cm = 24cm², Perimeter = 5+5+8 = 18cm
Rectangle: Area = 4cm × 6cm = 24cm², Perimeter = 2×(4+6) = 20cm
Both shapes have the same area (24cm²), but the rectangle has longer perimeter (20cm vs 18cm)!
Rectangle: Area = 4cm × 6cm = 24cm², Perimeter = 2×(4+6) = 20cm
Both shapes have the same area (24cm²), but the rectangle has longer perimeter (20cm vs 18cm)!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Real-world practice: Compare areas and perimeters of rooms in your house or tiles on the floor.
- Hands-on learning: Use string to measure perimeters and graph paper to count areas.
- Make it fun: Challenge your child to design two different shaped gardens with the same area but different perimeters.
