Estimate Angle Measurements

Become an angle detective by learning to estimate angles without a protractor!

What is Angle Estimation?

Angles are everywhere!
Angles are the space between two lines that meet at a point. We can estimate angles by comparing them to angles we know well: the right angle (90°), straight angle (180°), and full circle (360°). With practice, you can become great at guessing angles!

How to Estimate Angles

1️⃣ Find the vertex - the point where the two lines meet

2️⃣ Compare to known angles - is it smaller (acute) or larger (obtuse) than a right angle?

3️⃣ Make your estimate - guess how many degrees the angle might be

Let's Practice Estimating Angles!

Example 1: The Adjustable Angle

Move the slider to create an angle, then try to estimate its measurement!

Current angle: 30°

Example 2: Real World Angles

Look at these shapes and estimate their angles. Then check your answers!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Angle scavenger hunt: Look for angles around your home - doors, clocks, furniture corners. Estimate their angles then measure with a protractor to check.
  • Use body angles: Have your child make angles with their arms (90° when arms make an L shape, 180° when arms are straight out to sides).
  • Paper folding: Fold paper to create common angles (fold in half for 180°, then in half again for 90°, then once more for 45°).
