What is Perimeter?
Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape.
Imagine walking all the way around your school playground - that's like finding its perimeter! We measure perimeter in units like centimeters, meters, or feet.
How to Find Perimeter
1️⃣ Identify the shape (square, rectangle, triangle, etc.)
2️⃣ Measure all sides with a ruler or use given measurements
3️⃣ Add all side lengths together to get the perimeter!
Square: 4 equal sides
Rectangle: 2 pairs of equal sides
Triangle: 3 sides
Let's Practice!
Example 1: Fencing a Garden
Tom wants to put a fence around his rectangular garden that is 5 meters long and 3 meters wide. How much fencing does he need?
Perimeter = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (5m + 3m) = 2 × 8m = 16 meters
Example 2: Running Track
Sarah runs around a square field where each side is 12 meters. How far does she run in one lap?
Perimeter = 4 × side length = 4 × 12m = 48 meters
Parent Tips 🌟
- Real-world practice: Measure perimeters around your home - tables, beds, or even your backyard!
- Sidewalk chalk fun: Draw shapes outside and have your child walk the perimeter while counting steps.
- String activity: Use string to outline shapes, then measure the string to find the perimeter.
