What Are 2D Shapes?
2D shapes are flat shapes that have only two dimensions - length and width.
They're all around us! The screen you're looking at is a rectangle, the clock on the wall might be a circle,
and the slices of pizza are triangles. Let's learn to identify them by their special features!
How to Identify Shapes
1️⃣ Count the sides - How many straight edges does it have?
2️⃣ Look at the angles - Are they right angles, acute, or obtuse?
3️⃣ Check for special features - Are all sides equal? Are opposite sides parallel?
Let's Practice!
Example 1: The Mystery Shape
I have 4 sides. All my sides are equal in length. All my angles are right angles (90 degrees). What am I?
That's right! A square has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles.
Example 2: Another Shape Riddle
I have 3 sides. My sides can be equal or different lengths. I always have 3 angles that add up to 180 degrees. What am I?
Correct! A triangle always has 3 sides and 3 angles that add up to 180°.

Parent Tips 🌟
- Shape scavenger hunt: Look for 2D shapes around your home - plates (circles), windows (rectangles), etc.
- Drawing practice: Have your child draw shapes based on your descriptions to reinforce learning.
- Real-world connections: Point out how shapes are used in everyday objects (stop signs are octagons, soccer balls have pentagons).
