What Are Inequalities?
Inequalities help us compare numbers!
Just like we use equal signs (=) to show numbers are the same, we use inequality signs to show when numbers are different. The hungry alligator always wants to eat the bigger number!
How Number Lines Help
1️⃣ Numbers increase as we move RIGHT on the number line
2️⃣ Numbers decrease as we move LEFT on the number line
3️⃣ The inequality sign points to the smaller number
Let's Practice!
Example 1: Which is greater?
Compare 6 and 4 using the number line below:
0
2
4
6
8
10
Example 2: Complete the Inequality
Drag the correct symbol to complete the statement: 9 ___ 5

Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it physical: Create a giant number line on the floor with tape and have your child walk the inequalities - stepping to the right for greater numbers.
- Use real examples: Compare ages in your family ("Is your sister younger than you?") or prices at the store to make it practical.
- Play inequality games: Write numbers on cards and have your child place the correct inequality sign between them, using the "alligator eats the bigger number" trick.
