Fractions of Time Units

Understanding parts of hours, minutes, and seconds in a fun way!

What Are Fractions of Time?

Time can be divided into fractions just like pizza slices!
We use fractions to describe parts of hours, minutes, and seconds. For example, half an hour is 30 minutes, and a quarter hour is 15 minutes. Understanding these fractions helps us tell time more precisely and solve time-related problems.

Common Time Fractions

1️⃣ Half hour = 30 minutes = \(\frac{1}{2}\) hour

2️⃣ Quarter hour = 15 minutes = \(\frac{1}{4}\) hour

3️⃣ Three quarters hour = 45 minutes = \(\frac{3}{4}\) hour

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: The Pizza Party Clock

Imagine a clock as a pizza cut into 12 slices (hours). Each slice can be divided further!

This shows \(\frac{1}{2}\) hour (30 minutes)

Question: If you played outside for \(\frac{3}{4}\) of an hour, how many minutes is that?

Example 2: Fractional Time Challenge

Let's look at this clock showing 3:15. What fraction of the hour has passed?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Bake with time fractions: Use cooking timers to practice ("We need to bake these for ¾ of an hour - let's set the timer for 45 minutes!").
  • Clock crafts: Make paper plate clocks with your child and color different fractions (half in blue, quarters in red) to visualize the concepts.
  • Daily routines: Point out fractional times in daily activities ("Your 20-minute reading time is ⅓ of an hour").
