Add and Subtract Whole Numbers

Master the basics of adding and subtracting with fun examples!

Understanding Addition and Subtraction

Adding and subtracting are like building and sharing!
When we add numbers, we're combining amounts to make a bigger total. When we subtract, we're taking away or finding the difference between amounts. These are super important skills you'll use every day!

How to Add and Subtract

1️⃣ Line up the numbers by their place values (ones, tens, hundreds)

2️⃣ Start from the right (ones place) and move left

3️⃣ Carry over when adding if the sum is 10 or more in any column

4️⃣ Borrow when subtracting if the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit

Let's Practice Together!

Addition Example

Sarah has 347 stickers and her friend gives her 258 more. How many stickers does she have now?

3 4 7 + 2 5 8 = ?

347 + 258 = 605 stickers!

Let's break it down: 7+8=15 (write down 5, carry 1), 4+5=9 plus the 1 we carried makes 10 (write down 0, carry 1), 3+2=5 plus the 1 we carried makes 6!

Subtraction Example

There were 825 students at the school. 369 graduated. How many students are left?

8 2 5 - 3 6 9 = ?

825 - 369 = 456 students!

Here's how: 5-9 (we need to borrow, so 2 becomes 1 and 5 becomes 15), 15-9=6. Now 1-6 (we need to borrow again, so 8 becomes 7 and 1 becomes 11), 11-6=5. Finally 7-3=4!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Make it real: Use everyday situations like grocery shopping or sharing snacks to practice addition and subtraction.
  • Play games: Card games like "War" (adding two cards) or board games that involve counting spaces make practice fun.
  • Check work backwards: Teach your child to verify subtraction by adding the answer to the subtracted number - it should equal the original number.
