Choosing Numbers with Particular Sums or Differences

Finding number pairs that add or subtract to make a target number

Understanding Sums and Differences

Numbers can be friends that work together in special ways!
Sometimes we need to find two numbers that add up to a certain total (sum), or two numbers where one minus the other gives a specific result (difference). This skill helps with mental math and solving real-world problems!

How to Find Number Pairs

1️⃣ For sums: Think of number bonds that make your target

2️⃣ For differences: Imagine moving up or down a number line

3️⃣ Check your answer: Always add or subtract to verify

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Play store: Give your child pretend money and ask them to choose items that add up to a certain amount or calculate change.
  • Use dice: Roll two dice and have your child quickly say what they add up to or the difference between them.
  • Number line hop: Create a number line on the floor and have your child physically hop to demonstrate sums and differences.
