What is a Coordinate Plane?
A coordinate plane is like a treasure map for math!
It's made of two number lines that cross each other: the horizontal x-axis and vertical y-axis.
Together they help us locate points using ordered pairs like (3, 4). The first number tells us how
far to go right (positive) or left (negative), and the second number tells us how far to go up
(positive) or down (negative).
How to Plot Points in 3 Easy Steps
1️⃣ Start at the origin - where the x-axis and y-axis cross (0,0)
2️⃣ Move along the x-axis - go right for positive, left for negative
3️⃣ Move parallel to the y-axis - go up for positive, down for negative
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Plot the point (2, 3)
Example 2: Plot Your Own Point
Enter coordinates: ( , )
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it a game: Create a coordinate scavenger hunt where you hide small objects around the house and give coordinates to find them.
- Connect to real life: Show how GPS and video games use coordinates, like in Minecraft where you can see your position.
- Art with coordinates: Plot points to create pictures (like connect-the-dots) then color them in for a fun math-art project.
