What is a Line Plot?
Line plots are simple graphs that show how often things appear in data.
They use X marks or dots above a number line to show how many times each value appears. Line plots help us quickly see patterns and understand information at a glance!
How to Read a Line Plot
1️⃣ Look at the number line - This shows the different values in your data
2️⃣ Count the X's or dots - Each one represents one occurrence of that value
3️⃣ Find patterns - Look for clusters, gaps, or the most/least common values
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors
Here's a line plot showing how many students chose each ice cream flavor:
How many more students chose chocolate than strawberry?
Example 2: Jump Rope Competition
This line plot shows how many jumps students made in 30 seconds:
What was the most common number of jumps? (Enter a number between 20-45)
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it real: Create line plots together using data from your daily life - like how many fruits you eat each day or daily temperatures.
- Game time: Turn interpretation into a game by asking "I spy" questions about the line plot ("I spy the value that appears exactly 3 times!").
- Progress tracker: Use line plots to track your child's progress in activities like reading minutes or math facts mastered.
