Compare Decimals and Fractions on Number Lines

Learn to see which numbers are bigger by placing them on a line!

Understanding Number Lines

Number lines help us visualize where numbers belong!
Just like a ruler helps measure length, a number line helps measure value. We can place both fractions and decimals on the same line to see which is larger, smaller, or if they're equal.

How to Compare Numbers on a Line

1️⃣ Find equivalent forms - Convert fractions to decimals or vice versa

2️⃣ Divide the line - Make equal parts between whole numbers

3️⃣ Place and compare - The number farther to the right is larger!

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Which is greater - 0.6 or 3/5?

Let's place both on a number line from 0 to 1:

0
1

Convert 3/5 to a decimal: 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6

They land on the same spot! This means 0.6 3/5

Example 2: Place 0.75 and 2/3 on the line. Which is larger?

0
1

Try dragging the points to their correct positions:

  • Red point = 0.75 (3/4)
  • Green point = 2/3 (≈0.666...)

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Kitchen fractions: Use measuring cups to show how 1/2 cup (0.5) is more than 1/3 cup (≈0.33).
  • Number line race: Create a large number line on the floor and have kids "jump" to different fractions/decimals.
  • Real-world connections: Compare prices ($0.75 vs 3/4 dollar) or measurements (0.5 meter vs 1/2 meter).
