Understanding Decimal Forms
Did you know decimals can be written in different ways?
Standard form is the regular way we write decimals (like 3.75), while expanded form shows the value of each digit (like 3 + 0.7 + 0.05). Learning both helps us understand place value better!
How to Convert Between Forms
1️⃣ Identify each digit's place value (ones, tenths, hundredths, etc.)
2️⃣ For expanded form: Write each digit multiplied by its place value
3️⃣ For standard form: Add all the values together
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Standard to Expanded Form
Convert 4.62 to expanded form:
Expanded form: 4 + 0.6 + 0.02
Example 2: Expanded to Standard Form
Convert 2 + 0.3 + 0.08 to standard form:
Standard form: 2.38
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use money: Show how $1.25 equals 1 dollar + 2 dimes + 5 pennies to demonstrate expanded form.
- Make it a game: Write decimals on cards and race to convert them to expanded form.
- Real-world practice: When shopping, ask your child to express prices in both forms.
