Understanding Decimal Forms
Did you know decimals can be written in different ways?
Just like words can be written as whole words or broken into syllables, decimals can be written in
standard form (like 3.75) or expanded form using fractions (like 3 + 7/10 + 5/100). Both forms mean
exactly the same thing!
How to Convert Between Forms
1️⃣ Standard to Expanded: Break down each digit by its place value
2️⃣ Expanded to Standard: Add all the fraction parts together
3️⃣ Check your work: Make sure both forms equal the same amount
Let's Practice Together!

The standard form is 5.38
Because: 3/10 = 0.3 and 8/100 = 0.08, so 5 + 0.3 + 0.08 = 5.38
Parent Tips 🌟
- Money makes it real: Use dollar bills and coins to show how $1.25 equals 1 dollar + 2 dimes (2/10) + 5 pennies (5/100).
- Kitchen fractions: When baking, show how 0.75 cups is the same as 3/4 cup to connect decimals and fractions.
- Place value chart: Create a simple chart with columns for ones, tenths, and hundredths to visualize the conversion.
