What Are Decimal Place Values?
Decimal numbers help us represent amounts between whole
numbers.
Just like whole numbers have place values (ones, tens, hundreds), decimal numbers have place values too!
After the decimal point, we have tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. Each place is 10 times
smaller
than the one to its left.
Understanding Decimal Places
1️⃣ The first digit after the decimal is the tenths place (1/10)
2️⃣ The second digit is the hundredths place (1/100)
3️⃣ The third digit is the thousandths place (1/1000)

Parent Tips 🌟
- Money makes it real: Use dollars and cents to practice decimal places ($1.25 has 2 in the tenths place and 5 in hundredths).
- Kitchen measurements: When cooking, ask your child to read measurements like 0.75 cups and identify each digit's place value.
- Place value hopscotch: Draw a place value chart on the ground and have your child jump to the correct place when you call out a digit's position.
