Divide Fractions by Whole Numbers

Learn how to slice fractions into even smaller pieces!

Dividing Fractions by Whole Numbers

Did you know dividing fractions is like sharing pizza slices?
When you divide a fraction by a whole number, you're splitting that fraction into even smaller parts. It's like taking half a pizza and sharing it with 3 friends - each person gets an even smaller piece!

How to Divide Fractions by Whole Numbers

1️⃣ Turn the whole number into a fraction (put it over 1)

2️⃣ Flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal)

3️⃣ Multiply the first fraction by the flipped second fraction

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Sharing Cookies

You have \(\frac{3}{4}\) of a cookie and want to share it equally with 2 friends. How much does each person get?

1. Write 2 as a fraction: \(\frac{2}{1}\)

2. Find the reciprocal: \(\frac{1}{2}\)

3. Multiply: \(\frac{3}{4} \times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{3}{8}\)

Each person gets \(\frac{3}{8}\) of the cookie!

Example 2: Measuring Ingredients

A recipe calls for \(\frac{2}{3}\) cup of flour, but you only want to make half the recipe. How much flour should you use?

1. Write 2 as a fraction: \(\frac{2}{1}\)

2. Find the reciprocal: \(\frac{1}{2}\)

3. Multiply: \(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{2}{6}\)

4. Simplify: \(\frac{2}{6} = \frac{1}{3}\)

You should use \(\frac{1}{3}\) cup of flour!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real-world examples: Practice with measuring cups in the kitchen or dividing snacks to make the concept tangible.
  • Visual aids help: Draw circles divided into fractions and show how dividing them further creates smaller pieces.
  • Relate to multiplication: Emphasize that dividing by a whole number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (flipped fraction).
