Divide Whole Numbers and Unit Fractions

Learn how to share whole things and tiny pieces equally!

Understanding Division with Fractions

Dividing is all about sharing fairly!
When we divide whole numbers by unit fractions (fractions with 1 as the numerator), we're asking "How many small parts fit into the whole?" For example, if you have 3 pizzas and want to share them so each person gets ½ pizza, how many people can you feed? That's dividing whole numbers by fractions!

How to Divide Whole Numbers by Unit Fractions

1️⃣ Flip the fraction (find its reciprocal)

2️⃣ Change the division sign to multiplication

3️⃣ Multiply the whole number by the flipped fraction

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Sharing Chocolate Bars

You have 4 chocolate bars and want to give each friend ¼ of a bar. How many friends can get chocolate?

÷
= ?

4 ÷ ¼ = 4 × 4/1 = 16 friends!

When we divide by a fraction, we multiply by its reciprocal (flipped version). So dividing by ¼ is the same as multiplying by 4!

Example 2: Measuring Water

You have 2 liters of water and need to pour it into bottles that each hold ⅕ liter. How many bottles can you fill?

÷
= ?

2 ÷ ⅕ = 2 × 5/1 = 10 bottles!

Remember our trick: dividing by ⅕ is the same as multiplying by 5. So 2 liters can fill 10 bottles when each bottle holds ⅕ liter!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Kitchen Math: Use measuring cups to show division with fractions. Ask "How many ¼ cups fit into 1 cup?" (Answer: 4)
  • Pizza Party: Draw pizzas and divide them into slices to visualize fraction division. "If we have 3 pizzas cut into ½s, how many halves total?"
  • Reciprocal Rhyme: Teach the phrase "Don't divide—flip and multiply!" to remember the fraction division rule.
