Understanding Division with Larger Numbers
Dividing bigger numbers might seem tricky at first, but with practice,
you'll become a division expert!
When we divide 2-digit or 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, we use the same long division method
you've learned, just with slightly bigger numbers. The key is to estimate carefully and check your work
as you go.
The Division Steps
1️⃣ Divide: Estimate how many times the divisor fits into the dividend
2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply the divisor by your estimate
3️⃣ Subtract: Subtract this from your current dividend
4️⃣ Bring Down: Bring down the next digit (if any)
5️⃣ Repeat: Continue until there are no more digits to bring down
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 84 ÷ 12
Example 2: 156 ÷ 13
Parent Tips 🌟
- Estimation practice: Help your child practice estimating before dividing. Ask "About how many times does 15 go into 90?" to build number sense.
- Real-world applications: Use division in everyday situations like sharing snacks equally among friends or calculating how many weeks are in 84 days.
- Check with multiplication: Encourage your child to verify their answers by multiplying the quotient by the divisor to see if they get the original dividend.
