Understanding Long Division
Division is like sharing equally!
When we divide larger numbers by smaller ones, we're figuring out how many equal groups we can make.
It's like sharing candies fairly among friends or splitting a pizza into equal slices.
The Division Steps
1️⃣ Divide: See how many times the divisor fits into the first digit(s)
2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply the divisor by your answer
3️⃣ Subtract: Subtract that from the number you're dividing
4️⃣ Bring down: Bring down the next digit and repeat!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 84 ÷ 3
1. 3 goes into 8 two times (3 × 2 = 6)
2. Subtract 6 from 8 = 2
3. Bring down the 4 to make 24
4. 3 goes into 24 eight times (3 × 8 = 24)
5. Subtract 24 from 24 = 0
Answer: 28
Example 2: 156 ÷ 4
1. 4 goes into 1 zero times, so we look at 15
2. 4 goes into 15 three times (4 × 3 = 12)
3. Subtract 12 from 15 = 3
4. Bring down the 6 to make 36
5. 4 goes into 36 nine times (4 × 9 = 36)
6. Subtract 36 from 36 = 0
Answer: 39
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real-world examples: Have your child divide snacks among friends or family members to make it practical.
- Practice estimation first: Before solving, ask "About how many times do you think 4 fits into 156?" This builds number sense.
- Check with multiplication: After solving, multiply the answer by the divisor to verify it equals the original number.
