What Are Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers?
Fractions come in different outfits!
An improper fraction has a numerator (top number) that's equal to or larger than its denominator (bottom number), like 7/4. A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction, like 1 3/4. They're just different ways to show the same amount!
How to Convert Between Them
1️⃣ Improper to Mixed: Divide numerator by denominator to get whole number, remainder becomes new numerator
2️⃣ Mixed to Improper: Multiply whole number by denominator, add numerator, keep same denominator
3️⃣ Check your work: Convert back to the original form to verify your answer
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Convert 11/4 to a mixed number
How many whole pies can we make with 11/4 pies?
11/4
11 ÷ 4 = 2 with a remainder of 3
So we have 2 whole pies and 3/4 left over
Answer: 11/4 = 2 3/4
Example 2: Convert 3 2/5 to an improper fraction
How many fifths are in 3 whole pizzas plus 2/5 of a pizza?
3 2/5
3 whole pizzas = 3 × 5/5 = 15/5
Add the 2/5: 15/5 + 2/5 = 17/5
Answer: 3 2/5 = 17/5
Parent Tips 🌟
- Kitchen Math: Use measuring cups to show how 7/4 cups is the same as 1 3/4 cups when baking together
- Pizza Party: Cut pizzas or pies into fractions to visually demonstrate the conversions
- Flashcard Race: Create flashcards with mixed numbers on one side and improper fractions on the other for quick practice
