Area Between Two Rectangles

Finding the space between shapes is fun and useful!

What is the Area Between Two Rectangles?

When we have one rectangle inside another, the area between them is like a picture frame!
To find this area, we calculate the area of the big rectangle, subtract the area of the small rectangle inside it, and voilà - we have the area of the frame!

How to Calculate It

1️⃣ Find the area of the outer rectangle (length × width)

2️⃣ Find the area of the inner rectangle (length × width)

3️⃣ Subtract the inner area from the outer area

Let's Try Some Examples!

Example 1: Picture Frame

Imagine a picture frame where the outer rectangle is 10cm by 8cm, and the picture inside is 7cm by 5cm. What's the area of the frame?

Outer rectangle area: 10cm × 8cm = 80 cm²

Inner rectangle area: 7cm × 5cm = 35 cm²

Frame area = Outer - Inner = 45 cm²

Example 2: Swimming Pool Walkway

A rectangular pool is 20m by 15m, surrounded by a walkway that makes the outer rectangle 25m by 20m. What's the area of the walkway?

Adjust the pool size to see how it affects the walkway area:

Outer area (walkway + pool): 25m × 20m = 500 m²

Pool area: 15m × 10m = 150

Walkway area = 500 - 150 = 350

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Real-world connections: Point out rectangular frames around your home (picture frames, windows, doors) and calculate the border area together.
  • Hands-on practice: Use graph paper to draw rectangles and physically count the squares between them.
  • Make it a game: Challenge your child to find the largest possible area between two rectangles with the same perimeter.
