Classify Quadrilaterals

Discover the wonderful world of four-sided shapes!

What Are Quadrilaterals?

Quadrilaterals are four-sided shapes that are all around us!
From the rectangular screens we watch to the square tiles we walk on, quadrilaterals are everywhere. Let's learn how to classify them based on their sides, angles, and special properties.

How to Classify Quadrilaterals

1️⃣ Count the sides - All quadrilaterals have exactly 4 sides

2️⃣ Check the angles - Are they all right angles? Any obtuse or acute angles?

3️⃣ Examine side lengths - Are opposite sides equal? Are all sides equal?

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Identify the Shape

Look at these quadrilaterals and select the one that matches the description:

This shape has four equal sides but no right angles. What is it?

Square
Rectangle
Rhombus
That's right! A rhombus has four equal sides but doesn't need to have right angles.
Not quite! Try again. Remember, we're looking for four equal sides but no right angles.

Example 2: Drag and Drop Classification

Drag each shape name to the correct category:

Parallelogram
Trapezoid
Rhombus
Has exactly one pair of parallel sides:
Has two pairs of parallel sides:
Great job! You've classified these quadrilaterals correctly!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Shape scavenger hunt: Look for quadrilaterals around your home and neighborhood. Have your child classify them as you find them!
  • Use everyday objects: Practice with books (rectangles), tiles (squares), or kites (rhombuses) to make learning tangible.
  • Create shape art: Use construction paper to make a quadrilateral collage, labeling each shape with its proper name.
