What Are 2D and 3D Shapes?
Shapes are everywhere!
2D shapes (two-dimensional) are flat shapes that have length and width but no depth.
You can draw them on paper! Examples include squares, circles, and triangles.
3D shapes (three-dimensional) are solid shapes that have length, width, and depth. You
can hold them in your hand! Examples include cubes, spheres, and pyramids.
How to Identify Shapes
1️⃣ Count the dimensions - Does it have just length/width (2D) or length/width/depth (3D)?
2️⃣ Look at the faces - 2D shapes are flat, 3D shapes have multiple faces
3️⃣ Think about real-world examples - A pizza is a circle (2D), a ball is a sphere (3D)
Let's Practice!
Example 1: What shape is this?

Parent Tips 🌟
- Shape scavenger hunt: Go around your house or neighborhood and identify 2D and 3D shapes in everyday objects.
- Play dough shapes: Create 3D shapes with play dough and flatten them to show how they relate to 2D shapes.
- Tech connection: Show how video game designers use both 2D and 3D shapes to create characters and worlds.
