Multiply by 1-digit Numbers

Master the skill of multiplying larger numbers by single-digit numbers!

What Does It Mean to Multiply by 1-digit Numbers?

Multiplication is like repeated addition!
When we multiply a number by a 1-digit number (like 2, 5, or 9), we're adding that number to itself multiple times. For example, 4 × 3 means 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

How to Multiply by 1-digit Numbers

1️⃣ Write the numbers vertically with the larger number on top

2️⃣ Multiply each digit of the top number by the bottom number

3️⃣ Carry over if the product is 10 or more

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: 23 × 4

Let's break it down:

 2 3
×   4

First multiply 3 × 4 = ___

Then multiply 20 × 4 = ___

Now add them together: 12 + 80 = ___

Example 2: Try It Yourself!

What is 47 × 5?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real-world examples: Ask your child to calculate totals when shopping (e.g., "If one toy costs $6, how much would 4 toys cost?").
  • Practice with flashcards: Create multiplication flashcards for quick recall of basic facts that make larger problems easier.
  • Break it down: Encourage your child to break problems into smaller, manageable parts (like we did in Example 1).
