Understanding Integer Comparison
Comparing integers is like being a number detective!
Integers include all whole numbers, both positive and negative (like -3, 0, 5). When we compare them, we're figuring out which number is greater (>) or less (<) than another, or if they're equal (=).
How to Compare Integers
1️⃣ Positive numbers are always greater than negative numbers
2️⃣ For two negative numbers, the one closer to zero is greater
3️⃣ Zero is greater than all negative numbers but less than positive numbers
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Number Line Challenge
Click on the number that is greater in each pair:
5
-2
-3
-7
Example 2: Drag and Drop Comparison
Drag the correct symbol to compare these numbers:
>
<
=
8 ___ -3
-4 ___ -1
Parent Tips 🌟
- Temperature talk: Use weather temperatures to practice ("Is -5°C colder than -2°C?").
- Elevation examples: Compare altitudes ("A submarine at -200m is deeper than one at -50m").
- Game bonus: Play a card game where higher negative numbers lose (e.g., -3 beats -7).
