What Are Integers?
Integers are all the whole numbers, both positive and negative, including zero!
They're like regular counting numbers (1, 2, 3...) but they also include their opposites (-1, -2, -3...) and zero. We use integers to represent things like temperatures below zero, floors below ground level in buildings, or even game scores!
The Number Line
1️⃣ Positive numbers are to the right of zero
2️⃣ Negative numbers are to the left of zero
3️⃣ The further left you go, the smaller the number
Let's Practice!
Example 1: Temperature Changes
If it's 5°C outside and the temperature drops by 8 degrees, what will the new temperature be?
Starting at 5°C, dropping 8 degrees takes us below zero! 5 - 8 = -3°C. Brrr, that's cold!
Example 2: Elevator Adventure
You're on the 3rd floor of a building. You take the elevator down 5 floors. What floor do you end up on?
Starting at floor 3, going down 5 floors: 3 - 5 = -2. You're now 2 floors underground in the basement!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Real-world connections: Point out integers in daily life - temperatures, building floors, bank balances, or golf scores.
- Number line games: Create a giant number line on the floor and have your child "walk" through integer problems.
- Opposites attract: Help your child see that positive and negative numbers cancel each other out (5 + -5 = 0).
