Inequalities with Decimals

Comparing decimal numbers using <, >, and = signs

Understanding Decimal Inequalities

Did you know decimals can be compared just like whole numbers?
Inequalities with decimals help us compare amounts, prices, and measurements in real life. Whether you're comparing prices at the store or measuring ingredients for a recipe, understanding decimal inequalities is super useful!

How to Compare Decimals

1️⃣ Line up the decimals - Write them vertically with decimal points directly under each other

2️⃣ Compare digit by digit from left to right (tenths, hundredths, thousandths)

3️⃣ Use the correct symbol: < (less than), > (greater than), or = (equal to)

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Which is greater?

Compare: 3.45 ___ 3.54

3.45 < 3.54 because when we compare the hundredths place (4 vs 5), 4 is less than 5.

Great job! Remember to compare digit by digit after the decimal point!

Example 2: Shopping Comparison

A toy costs $15.99 at Store A and $15.89 at Store B. Which store has the better price?

Compare: 15.99 ___ 15.89

15.99 > 15.89 because 99 cents is more than 89 cents.

Smart thinking! Store B has the better price since $15.89 is less than $15.99.

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Grocery store practice: When shopping, ask your child to compare prices of similar items with different decimal values.
  • Sports statistics: Compare player statistics (like batting averages or race times) that use decimals.
  • Money games: Play "store" at home using prices with decimals to practice comparing amounts.
