Understanding 2-Digit Divisors
Division with 2-digit divisors is just like regular division, but we need to be extra careful with our estimations!
When dividing by numbers like 15, 24, or 36, we use the same long division steps but might need to adjust our first guess if it's too big or too small. Remember: practice makes perfect!
The Division Steps
1️⃣ Divide: Estimate how many times the divisor fits into the dividend
2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply your estimate by the divisor
3️⃣ Subtract: Subtract this from your current dividend
4️⃣ Bring down the next digit and repeat until done!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Interactive Division
Let's solve: 486 ÷ 18
Hint: Think about how many 18s are in 48 first.
Example 2: Complete the Division
Solve: 735 ÷ 21
- (21 × )
Tip: If your first estimate is too big or small, just adjust and try again!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Estimation practice: Help your child practice estimating before calculating - "About how many 24s are in 120?" builds number sense.
- Real-world applications: Use scenarios like dividing treats among class parties or calculating cost per item to make division meaningful.
- Error analysis: When mistakes happen, ask "What made you choose that number?" to understand their thinking process.
