Understanding 3-digit Division
Division with 3-digit divisors might seem tricky at first, but once you learn the steps, you'll be solving them like a pro!
When dividing by 3-digit numbers, we use the same long division method you already know, just with a few more steps. The key is to estimate carefully and check your work as you go.
The Division Steps
1️⃣ Divide: Estimate how many times the divisor fits into the dividend
2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply the divisor by your estimate
3️⃣ Subtract: Subtract this from your current dividend
4️⃣ Bring down: Bring down the next digit and repeat!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 4,284 ÷ 126
1. Does 126 fit into 428? Let's estimate: 126 × 3 = 378
2. 428 - 378 = 50
3. Bring down the 4 to make 504
4. Now, 126 × 4 = 504 exactly!
What's the final answer?
Example 2: 7,605 ÷ 195
1. Does 195 fit into 760? Estimate: 195 × 3 = 585
2. 760 - 585 = 175
3. Bring down the 5 to make 1,755
4. Now, 195 × 9 = 1,755 exactly!
What's the final answer?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Real-world practice: Have your child divide large numbers from real life, like calculating how many cartons of eggs (each with 12 eggs) you'd get from 1,500 eggs.
- Estimation first: Encourage estimating before calculating to develop number sense. Ask "About how many times does 150 fit into 4,500?" before solving exactly.
- Check with multiplication: Teach your child to always verify division answers by multiplying the quotient by the divisor to get back to the original number.
