Understanding Fractions
Fractions come in different forms!
An improper fraction has a numerator larger than its denominator (like 7/4), while a mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction (like 1 3/4). They represent the same value, just in different forms!
Conversion Steps
1️⃣ Improper to Mixed: Divide numerator by denominator to get whole number, remainder becomes new numerator
2️⃣ Mixed to Improper: Multiply whole number by denominator, add numerator, keep same denominator
3️⃣ Check your work: Convert back to the original form to verify your answer
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Convert 11/4 to a mixed number
1. Divide 11 ÷ 4 = 2 with remainder 3
2. The whole number is 2
3. The remainder 3 becomes the new numerator
Answer: 2 3/4
Example 2: Convert 3 2/5 to an improper fraction
1. Multiply whole number by denominator: 3 × 5 = 15
2. Add the numerator: 15 + 2 = 17
3. Keep the same denominator: 5
Answer: 17/5
Parent Tips 🌟
- Pizza fractions: Use pizza slices to visually demonstrate conversions (7/4 is the same as 1 whole pizza and 3/4 of another)
- Real-world practice: When cooking, ask your child to convert recipe measurements between forms (1½ cups = 3/2 cups)
- Flashcard game: Create matching cards with equivalent mixed numbers and improper fractions to play memory games
