Fractions of Whole Numbers II

Mastering fractions with larger numbers and real-world applications!

Understanding Fractions of Larger Numbers

Fractions help us divide things fairly and understand parts of a whole.
When working with fractions of whole numbers, we're essentially multiplying the fraction by that number. It's like sharing a large pizza or dividing a big bag of candy among friends!

How to Find Fractions of Whole Numbers

1️⃣ Divide the whole number by the denominator (bottom number)

2️⃣ Multiply the result by the numerator (top number)

3️⃣ Simplify your answer if possible

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Pizza Party Fractions

You have 3 large pizzas, each cut into 8 slices. You eat 1/4 of one pizza. How many slices did you eat?

1/4 of 8 slices = (1 ÷ 4) × 8 = 2 slices

You ate 2 slices of pizza!

Example 2: School Supplies

Your class has 36 students. 2/3 of them brought colored pencils today. How many students is that?

2/3 of 36 students = (2 ÷ 3) × 36 = 24 students

24 students brought colored pencils today!

Try calculating: What if 5/6 of the class brought pencils? 5/6 of 36 = 30 students

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Real-world practice: When shopping, ask your child to calculate fractions of quantities (e.g., "If we use 1/4 of this 20oz detergent, how much is left?")
  • Visual aids: Use measuring cups in the kitchen to demonstrate fractions of whole amounts (cups, liters, etc.)
  • Game approach: Create fraction challenges with rewards - "If you can tell me what 3/5 of 45 is, you get 3/5 of this cookie!"
